andermatt

andermatt is a hidden gem

Our stay in Andermatt was definitely up there on my list. It’s a hidden gem that didn’t see much traffic while we were there and the perfect small alps resort.

We stayed here for 3 nights and did 2 days of skiing. Ideally, if the slopes were fully open, this would be enough. Unfortunately, one of the connecting chairlifts was closed which ended up shutting down half the mountain…! Otherwise, the snow was probably the best we experienced the whole trip and had blue skies every day. We stayed at Hotel & Restaurant Zum Schwarzen Bären. The hotel was freshly refurbed and the aesthetics were right down my alley, location was also very central, just a short walk to both lifts. Can’t complain about breakfast either which was very, very good. Dinner… was on another level and is listed in my recommendations.

Ideally, if I were planning my itinerary again, I would ski Andermatt Gemsstock first as this can be done in one day. The snow was also much, much better on this side, and the runs felt much more open. The other days can be spent on the Andermatt-Sedrun side, as this connects both Andermatt and the opposing town, Sedrun. This is where the lift was faulty so I didn’t get the chance to ski to Sedrun, maybe next time!

The town is also small enough to just walk around or you could take the local bus, which is free. Do note that the shops close relatively early here because the town is very limited and small.

my recommendations

  • hotel & restaurant zum schwarzen bären

This was the restaurant at the hotel that we stayed at. Food was superb. Modern Italian cuisine and also packed a great ambience.

  • walk along unteralpreuss

This is the river that runs through the village. Pick a nice day and you will get some stunning photos.

  • visit himalaya kiosk

We hiked up the Oberalpstrasse trail to the Himalaya kiosk (see video below) but you could also ski down from the Gütsch cable car stop (Bergst. Andermatt). They make a great hot choccy but the highlight is the views and vibes. They pump the tunes here! Great for sunset.
