grindelwald

something straight out of a movie

The moment you walk off the train, you know this place is special. It literally looks like something out of a Hollywood movie. The fact it had snowed the days before we arrived meant that Grindelwald looked like a winter wonderland. Mount Eiger surrounds the village which is good and bad. Good in terms of the view because that thing is huge!! But the downside it it gets freaking cold since the town is blocked from the sun,

This was the first of our 3 night, 2 days of skiing stops. We stayed at a lodging called ‘First Lodge,’ located right next to one of the two main ski areas. Ironically, while situated so close to the cable car (literally out the front), we didn’t ski that mountain and instead took the bus every morning to the other mountain….

I would highly recommend skiing from Grindelwald Terminal and taking the Eiger Express as this connects you with the Wengen side as well, rather than just Grindelwald. This honestly opens up a new playing field as there are endless runs that run forever. We were limited with what we could do in two days so opted to just do the Grindelwald-Wengen side rather than Grindelwald First, which is a comparatively smaller mountain. Make a note to ski Trail 45 because that is the longest World Cup Ski run in the world. If you are lucky like us, you may get to ski it set up for the race!

my recommendations

  • eiger express cable car

Take the Eiger Express cable car all the way to the top. Around a 15 minute ride but hella worth it. Great views in a brand new, 30 person cable.

  • restaurant bellevue

Very cosy atmosphere and perfect for a cold, wintery night. Food was delicious. I had the pork rouladen and can strongly recommend.

  • trail 45 (lauberhorn-weltcup abfahrt)

We were lucky enough to ski part of this run which is the longest downhill Ski World Cup black run ranging over 5km in length. You reach some crazy speeds (at least it felt like we did).
